Don't be surprised if Monday morning's send-off isn't quite as "chipper" as the first days...the newness wears off and the freedoms of summer are still fresh in the mind.  If your youngster is fighting back tears (or having a full-blown meltdown), this article offers some helpful suggestions.

We're following a B-Week Schedule.

We love to get a glimpse into the lives of our students outside of school.  Photos are used to help populate a slide show that displays on the TV kiosk in the main hallway (outside the gym).  Take a moment to add a photo that features your child(ren) from this summer or the first week of school!   The album remains active throughout the school year, so revisit it and add photos that we can enjoy.

The Apple Tree Book Club is a program to encourage reading through in-school recognition. Here’s how it works:

Your Summer reading and school year reading count toward your total.

Give your Reading Log to your Teacher when you have read at least 10 books.

You MUST have your whole name (first & last) Teacher, grade, book title and number of pages for each book on your Reading Log.

10 books = Pink Blossom  

25 books = Green Apple

50 books = Yellow Apple

75 books = Red Apple

100 books = Gold Apple

Breakfast and Lunch are available daily. 

Student breakfast $1.75  Student Lunch $3.00  A la carte milk $0.75

An application must be submitted every school year to maintain eligibility for free and reduced price meals. Benefits do not automatically carry over from year to year. To prevent any gap in your child's meal services when school starts, please take a moment to fill out the annual online form.

Weekly menus are published in our Osprey Nest News and are also available on-line.

ALL families are encouraged to create a My School Bucks account in order to monitor purchases and fund meal accounts electronically. This remains active throughout your child's active enrollment in any SMCPS school.

I am so excited to start my second year here at LES! Please know that you can always ask any health-related questions. I will do my best to guide you or find you answers!

If you have a new student or a change to their health status, please contact me with updates or questions. You can find the forms needed here for medications, immunizations, allergies and more.

Any student who has an injury with restrictions must have a note from the provider stating when it starts with the restrictions and one to resume activities. If you have any questions regarding this, please let me know.

During a normal school day, all students have a 30- minute lunch period, and all students in Kg through Grade 5 also have a 45-minute specials block. The DRAFT schedule for this is pictured here for your reference.  

Teachers will schedule a snack time according to their individual grade-level schedules. Your child's teacher will communicate directly about this, as well as the detailed schedule for the assigned special that students attend each day.

Kindergarten families:  If you are planning to pack lunch for your child, now is a GREAT time to have a picnic.  Notice how much your child eats without constant prompting and what he/she can or cannot open independently.  We encourage students to take home things that they do not finish eating.  (This would not apply to packaging that has to be ripped and could leak or to school lunch items.) 

We respect the many different ways that families like to recognize their child’s birthday. In addition to class recognitions of birthdays, our entire school community enjoys hearing about student birthdays during daily morning annoucements.

Some families choose to provide a small trinket to mark their child’s birthday. Edible treats are not distributed for student birthdays. If you are planning on providing something for the class on your child’s birthday, we ask that you follow these guidelines:

The school system does not provide medical payment coverage for student accidents that result
from school-related activities. Instead, it is the responsibility of the parent(s) or guardian(s) to
provide such coverage.

In collaboration with other members of the MABE Insurance Pool, the school system is making
available the following student accident insurance coverage to provide affordable coverage options.
The following plans are available to all St. Mary’s County Public School students regardless of
whether they participate in activities sponsored by the school or other sponsors. The Bob
McCloskey Insurance group’s website is www.bobmccloskey.com/k12voluntary and it provides
more information about the types of coverage available.

LES PTA Welcomes You

The Leonardtown Elementary School Parent Teacher Association invites all community members -- parents, teachers, staff, family members and anyone else who wants to help our school community thrive -- to join the PTA. 

The PTA supports the following:

Events: Events like Chalk the Walk, Fall Festival, and family breakfasts at no cost to our students and school community

School Grants: Funding for Club Osprey, Gold Apple Reader, and classroom needs

Staff Appreciation: Regular activities to celebrate LES staff

Register for or renew your PTA membership at join.lesospreys.org. Cost is only $10 for the whole year for parents, family members, and community members. Additional members from the same household and teachers and staff only pay $5.25 for the whole year. For those who register/renew by or at the open house, they can receive a school calendar magnet to keep track of school closures and other important dates.

Save the Date: Chalk the Walk + PTA General Meeting

Mark your calendars for the PTA's annual chalk the walk event on Wednesday, September 9 at 5:30 pm in front of the school. This is a free event where all students are welcome to decorate the sidewalks around the school with positive messages and designs. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Immediately following the event will be the first PTA meeting of the school year. Join us to learn more about the PTA and what we have planned for this year and to share your own thoughts and questions. 

Child care will be available upon request. Our student volunteers from Leonardtown High School, National Honor Society will be providing child care in the library for parents that are attending the PTA meeting.
